The Stages of Dentures
Fitchburg, MA – Dentures are a wonderful way to replace missing teeth and restore a mouth to proper function. If you have several missing teeth, dentures may be right for you. But what is the process for getting dentures? Dr. Mark Berenshteyn of SmileCare Dental explains the process step-by-step.
First, let’s look at what dentures are. Many people believe they are only for senior citizens, but anyone who is missing teeth can benefit from them.
What are dentures?
Dentures are a removable replacement for people missing multiple teeth. Your dentures can be complete or partial, depending on your needs. Partial dentures are used when some teeth are remaining and there is little need for supplemental support. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth in one arch are missing.
There are multiple benefits to dentures, including:
- Better oral health. Dentures can prevent further issues from popping up by filling the space left by missing teeth. This can help prevent decay and gum disease.
- Improved appearance. Using dentures to replace missing teeth can restore your smile to its original beauty, increasing your self-esteem along the way.
- Restored function. Missing teeth can cause problems with eating, speaking, and even smiling. Dentures can restore your smile to proper function.
What is the process for getting dentures?
Getting dentures is a process, but one that the experts at SmileCare Dental will help you through. From your initial consultation and beyond, our team is here to help you on your smile journey.
1-Initial consultation.
The first step is scheduling a consultation. At this appointment, we’ll go over your medical history, do a thorough exam including imaging and X-rays, and evaluate your oral health. We’ll discuss your options and take the time to answer questions or address any concerns you have. This is also the time we will discuss costs with you and ensure we have your dental insurance properly filed.
2-Tooth extractions, if needed.
Some patients may need unhealthy teeth removed to ensure their smile will be as healthy as possible. If you need multiple teeth extracted, this can be done in phases to ensure your comfort.
3-Preliminary impressions.
We’ll take impressions of your teeth and gums to ensure your dentures are designed to fit perfectly in your mouth. The preliminary impressions help us determine the best options for you, discuss how you want your dentures to look and feel, decide tooth shade, and preliminary impressions from which dentures can be created.
4-Secondary impressions.
During this appointment, Dr. Mark and his team will take impressions using the custom trays we created at the previous appointment. Do a bite examination to determine how your jaws fit together. Create a trial denture to test shape and fit. This appointment really helps us decide the shape and look of your dentures to ensure you have the most realistic looking smile.
5-Wax rim appointment.
This helps determine the bite and positions of teeth so we can ensure the final fit is perfect.
6-Fitting appointment.
We refer to this as the “try-in” appointment because it allows you to test out your dentures. We’ll help you assess the color, fit, shape, and overall appearance to ensure it is perfect for you.
7-Placement of dentures.
At this final appointment, your new dentures will be placed, and you’ll be ready to show off your new smile. Dr. Mark and his team will discuss everything you need to know about caring for your dentures; while ensuring you have a proper fit. We can make adjustments if needed so your dentures will be as comfortable as possible.
Once you receive your new dentures, you’re ready to show them off to the world. We recommend yearly follow-up visits to ensure nothing has changed with your oral health. For those who have certain medical conditions or who are smokers, you may need more frequent follow-ups.
Our goal at SmileCare Dental is to provide you with the smile you deserve. From regular check-ups to cosmetic and restorative dentistry, we provide all of the dental care you need under one roof.
